Welcome to Porto, Bem-vindo to the EAIR Forum Porto 2001
The University of Porto The University of Porto is the largest and the most comprehensive Portuguese university, with 25,000 students (3000 post-graduate), 2000 teaching and research staff, and courses covering almost every field of learning. It is a public university founded in 1911, with its roots in the Royal Marine and Trading Academy (1803) and the Royal School of Surgery (1825). The University of Porto is a research-oriented institution with a strong commitment to international co-operation and to the development of university quality culture in Europe. The Forum will take place in the brand new building of the Faculty of Engineering of the University.
The City of Porto is situated on the Northwestern Atlantic cost of the Iberian Peninsula. The character of the city was shaped in medieval and modern ages. A city of hard-working craftsmen and merchants whose ships dwelled in the "seven parts of the world", it also developed an iron and steam profile with the industrial revolution. A pioneering architectural and social renovation was recognised by UNESCO that classified Porto as a World Heritage urban centre. Birthplace or home of several artistic creators, Porto will be in 2001 - together with Rotterdam - Europe's Cultural Capital. Port Wine, which matures in the cellars of Gaia, is a world-famous artistic creation known for centuries. The city of Porto extends a warm welcome to its visitors in September 2001.
The Faculty of Engineering/The Forum Venue The Faculty of
Engineering dates back to 1762, when the Nautical School was created. In
1911, it was founded as an Affiliated School to the Faculty of Sciences.
In 1915, it became a Technical Faculty and, in 1926, it gained the status
of Faculty of Engineering. Nowadays, it is one of the largest Faculties of
the University of Porto, with about 5,000 students and more than 400
lecturers, of whom about two thirds hold a doctoral degree.
The new building of the Faculty, where the Forum was held, was
opened in March 2000 and is three times larger than its former facilities.
