The Experience of Students/Learners

Track chair
Prof Ellen Hazelkorn Dublin Institute of Technology Ireland

Track description
This track will deal with the learners' experiences. Mass higher education and new technologies are challenging the traditional teaching role. The teacher's role may have changed from teacher/instructor to facilitator. Students have changed as well, the literature speaks of students as consumers/clients and some speak of students being part of the Nintendo generation, more focused on being entertained than being taught.

Questions that currently emerge and will form the basis for this track are:

  • Which roles could/should students have in present-day higher education?
  • What do the contextual changes imply for students as learners?
  • What are actually the expectations and experiences of students in various higher education systems?
  • What are good practices regarding the enhancement of the learning experience?
