University Governance & Management

Track chair
Dr Paul Temple Institute of Education University of London United Kingdom

Track description
This track is looking at the changing nature of university governance. Management and governance of higher education institutions is becoming increasingly professionalised, with academic leaders being selected (instead of elected) and middle managers being charged with clear mandates from the executive. Also governing bodies are presumed to take on roles beyond ceremony.

This track invites papers on the following topics:

  • What do changes in governance imply for university's role in society?
  • What do the changes imply for the effectiveness of internal governance and decision-making?
  • How can universities strike a balance between the executive's "right to manage" and meeting the demands of the academics?
  • Can we learn from best practices of "good governance" from other countries and institutions?
