A venue of the National Gallery of Art was opened in this building in 1993. It held permanent expositions of Lithuanian folk art, sculptures and other organised exhibitions. In 1999, the building was closed due to its bad technical condition. In 2003, the National Gallery of Art was reconstructed and expanded by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania.
In 2009, the National Gallery of Art opens to visitors. It will host soon two major projects of the ‘Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009’ programme: international exhibition of art ‘Dialogues of Colour and Sound’ and international exhibition of art and design ‘The Modern Design of the Cold War 1945–1970’.
The National Gallery of Art is situated in the newly built part of the Vilnius city centre on the right bank of the river Neris – Konstitucijos avenue – in between the hotel ‘Reval Hotel Lietuva’ and the fitness and entertainment centre ‘Forum Palace’, surrounded by the towering skyscraper district. It has easy access from the Vilnius downtown via the White bridge, or by public transport.
